Chinese Geo-economics and the Chinese Dream

May 26, 2026

The American International Club recently welcomed Dr. Dominique Jolly, renowned business strategy expert, as part of its Professionals & Entrepreneurs series.   The event was held at the American International Women’s Club office with 30+ attending.

Drawing on the insights from his latest book, Chinese Geo-economics: Maneuvering for the Chinese Dream, Dr. Jolly delivered a thought-provoking presentation on China's economic evolution and its growing influence on the global stage. The evening attracted professionals and business leaders eager to gain a deeper understanding of one of the most consequential economic stories of our time.

Dr. Jolly traced China's remarkable transformation since its economic opening in 1978, highlighting the country's extraordinary achievements in economic growth, industrial development, finance, and technological innovation. He explained how China rose to become the world's second-largest economy and a major force in global trade and investment. However, he also examined the challenges that have emerged in recent years, raising the question of why China has become a less attractive destination for foreign businesses and investors than it once was.

A central theme of the discussion was the shift in priorities and strategies among Chinese political leaders as the country pursues what is often referred to as the "Chinese Dream." Dr. Jolly explored how changes in domestic policy, geopolitical tensions, demographic pressures, and economic restructuring have altered China's relationship with the rest of the world. He emphasized that understanding China today requires looking beyond traditional economic indicators and considering the broader interplay of political, social, and strategic factors.

The presentation generated a lively exchange of ideas and questions from attendees. Participants left with a richer appreciation of the complexities of Chinese geo-economics and the opportunities and risks facing organizations operating in or with China. Dr. Jolly's insights provided valuable context for understanding the current global economic environment and the pivotal role China continues to play in shaping it.
