"The State of U.S Democracy and the Implications for the World" The Honorable Charles C. Adams, Jr., former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States to the Republic of Finland (2015-2017)

The AIC were delighted to welcome  former U.S. Ambassador Charles C. Adams Jr. to our December luncheon, which also served as the AICs 2025 AGM.

Ambassador Adams delivered a stark assessment of American democracy, expressing deep concerns about its current trajectory. Criticizing Joe Biden for running for a second term despite initially positioning himself as a one-term "bridge president," which Adams argued led to the current political crisis.

Adams talked of the current disturbing scenes on the streets in cities where ICE agents have been deployed. He criticized the new administration's policies, particularly tariffs, which he argued function as taxes on American consumers rather than payments from foreign countries.

He expressed his concerns of the potential disintegration of current US political systems – also presenting a more optimistic scenario involving Congressional Republicans turning against the current administration due to pressure from constituents experiencing economic hardship.

Those present had many questions for Ambassador Adams and a lively Q&A followed.

The discussion concluded with Ambassador Adams expressing hope that younger generations would engage politically to preserve democratic institutions.
