Hodler parallélisme

The year 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Ferdinand Hodler in his apartment on the quai du Mont-Blanc. He lived in Geneva from 1871  - when he came to study with Barthélemy Menn - until his death. The Musées d'art d'histoire (MAH) possesses about 150 paintings, 800 drawings, notebooks and prints (and even his furniture!) - the largest collection of his works.

MAH and Kunstmuseum Bern – cities of Holder's birth (1853) and death on 19 May– have joined forces to pay tribute to him with exhibitions on the theme of parallelism. In a lecture given in 1897 – entitled The Artist's Mission – Holder set out his vision of nature and the world, organized in his view into large parallel lines. This visual and sensory experience was to inspire his compositions, being applied to mountains, clouds, and forests, as well as to people, alone or in groups or in action.

Our guided tour will explore and explain Hodler's pictorial system with numerous examples.
