Born in Geneva, Mr. François Longchamp has a master degree in Law from Geneva University. In 1986, he became Secretary General of the Liberal Democratic Party of Geneva. Five years later he joined the cantonal administration and has since headed the Department of Health and Social Affairs since 1992, where he tackled several tough reforms to improve the efficiency of cantonal policies.
After ten years in the high public administration, he joined the daily Le Temps as head of the regional section, then held various responsibilities in a large private bank.
In 2003, François Longchamp was called to the position of Executive Director of the Foundation "Foyer Handicap", dedicated to helping and rehabilitating people with disabilities. In just a few weeks, he managed to save this important Foundation from bankruptcy.
He was elected as State Councillor of the Canton of Geneva for the first time in 2005. After this he has successively headed the Department of Solidarity and Employment, the Department of Town Planning and, since December 2013, the Presidential Department.
