The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was established in 1863. It operates worldwide, helping people affected by conflict and armed violence and promoting the laws that protect victims of war.
Being an independent and neutral organization, its mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949.
ICRC is based in Geneva, Switzerland, and employs over 21,000 people in more than 100 countries.
It is funded mainly by voluntary donations from governments and from National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

Mirjana Spoljaric Egger was elected ICRC President in November 2021.
Previously, she served as Head of the United Nations and International Organisations Division of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. She also took up several assignments in the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs in Bern, Cairo, New York and in the Office of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
Ms Spoljaric Egger studied at the University of Basel and the University of Geneva, and holds a master's degree in Philosophy, Economics and International Law. She is married with two children.
