January 13 - Concert Orchestre Suisse Romande
Institué dans de nombreuses villes, le Concert de l’An doit son succès à des mélodies flamboyantes qui, réunies, forment un véritable feu d’artifice. Ce sont souvent des airs quel’on connaît mais dont on a oublié le titre, l’auteur et qui soudain se trouvent transfigurées par un grand orchestre.
Ainsi en est-il des pièces de Borodine, Tchaïkovski et Khatchaturian, qui se côtoient pour le Concert de l’An 2016.
Le faste sera aussi celui qu’apportent deux interprètes, dont la carrière fulgurante s’épanouit dans le monde entier : le prodige vénézuélien Ilyich Rivas et la violoncelliste Alisa Weilerstein, qui stupéfie par la vitalité de son jeu.

The OSR Concert de l'An des Amis offers a delightful program of light-classical, tuneful, works by Russian composers.
Alexandre Borodine (1833-1857): From his most important work, the opera Prince Igor, the Polovsty Dances is a popular concert extract from the opera. The Polovtsy, or Cumans, were Turkic nomads from the Eurasian steppe. Selected tunes have been used in popular music and culture; Borodine was even received a Tony Award in 1954 for Best Music, posthumously, of course.
Peotr Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) is included with two works. Variations on a Rococo theme for cello and orchestra is one of the masterpieces for this genre. Capriccio Italien was inspired by a trip to Rome during Carnival.
Aram Khatchaturian (1903-1978) Orchestra Suite from his ballet Spartacus was one of the most acclaimed Russian works of the post-Stalin period. Tunes from it have also been used in theater and cinema.
Alisa Weilerstein (b. 1982), cellist, is from Rochester, New York, and a graduate of Columbia University with a BA in Russian history. At age 13 she debuted with the Cleveland Orchestra playing this very work. She received a MacArthur Fellow “genius grant” in 2011. Her chamber music concerts are often with her parents, violinist father and pianist mother. Weilerstein plays a 1790 William Forster cello.
