Member Spotlight: Ron Banks
A Life of Leadership, Service, and Community
From Kansas City to Geneva, Ron Banks has built an international career spanning FMCG, entrepreneurship, consulting, and academia, while remaining deeply committed to serving the American and international community. Today, as President of the American International Club (AIC), his journey reflects both professional ambition and a strong sense of purpose, rooted in connection and contribution.
From Kansas City to Geneva
Ron’s international journey began early. In 1973, after backpacking across Europe for a summer, he set himself a goal: to return and live in Europe by the age of 30.
He kept that promise, arriving in Germany at 30 with his wife and young child to begin working for a military food broker. Six years later, he joined RJ Reynolds International, working across multiple European markets including Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Turkey, and Greece.
His career with RJR led him to Geneva, where he joined the Duty-Free division. At the same time, he completed his MBA, further strengthening his international business profile. What was initially a professional move soon became a long-term life decision.
“My wife had grown up across Europe, and for her it felt natural. Our children went to international schools here, and over time, Switzerland became home.”
Entrepreneurship and a Diverse Career Path
After leaving RJR, Ron co-founded a cigarette company with two partners, which was successfully sold six years later. He then moved into consulting and business development, working across a remarkably diverse range of sectors, from medical technologies and heavy industry to agriculture and software.
Alongside his business activities, Ron also pursued a passion for education, teaching marketing and luxury management at several universities in Switzerland at both undergraduate and MBA levels.
A Commitment to Community: The AIC Journey
Ron’s involvement with the AIC began in 1999 in the simplest way, volunteering to sell T-shirts at the 4th of July celebration. What started as a small contribution quickly evolved into deeper engagement, leading him to roles as Committee Chair, Vice President, and eventually President.
“For me, it was about being part of the American international community and giving back.”
During his presidency (2016–2018), Ron led the Club through a critical period of transition. Faced with declining membership and revenue, the AIC shifted from a professionally managed structure to a member-driven organization, a move that proved essential to its survival and continued relevance.
“We had to adapt, or the Club would not have continued. It was not easy, but it was the right decision.”
Among the achievements he is most proud of are efforts to diversify membership, particularly increasing female participation and leadership, and the creation of a Student Leadership Program, which continues to bring younger generations into the AIC community.
Celebrating Community and Tradition
Ron remains closely involved in some of the AIC’s most iconic events, including the 4th of July and Thanksgiving celebrations.
For him, these moments go beyond tradition. They represent the spirit and values of the Club.
“Hanging the American flag is something I take very seriously—it’s a moment of respect.”
He is also quick to recognize the people behind the scenes, particularly Office Manager Ruth Dyson, whose dedication plays a key role in bringing these events to life.
Mentorship, Education, and Giving Back
Beyond his leadership roles, Ron remains deeply committed to mentorship and education. As an Adjunct Professor at Webster University Geneva and an active participant in the AIC-Webster Mentorship Program, he is passionate about supporting the next generation.
“Seeing young people develop and grow into professionals is incredibly rewarding.”
He believes mentorship is essential, not only to share experience, but also to help shape the future of the AIC itself.
Leadership Values
When asked what guides him across his many roles, Ron’s answer is simple and clear:
-
Respect: for others, their ideas, and their perspectives
-
Responsibility: honoring commitments and being accountable
-
Kindness: building relationships that make things happen
These values have shaped both his professional success and his long-standing contribution to the AIC community.
A Life Beyond Work
Outside of his professional and community commitments, Ron has a lifelong passion for music. From collecting records to attending live performances, music remains a constant source of inspiration and enjoyment.
“It would be difficult to imagine a world without music.”
Looking Ahead
Today, Ron continues to balance business, teaching, and community involvement, remaining active in the AIC, American Citizens Abroad (ACA), the AICC, and the Association of American Clubs.
His journey reflects not only a successful international career but also a lasting commitment to community, leadership, and giving back, values that continue to shape the AIC today.
