AIC Snow Day February 26th 2016

The first ever AIC Snow Day was a complete adventure for everyone who signed up. Your "Chair" had never made the trek before and was relying solely on input from 2 friends who know the area well and had made the run many times. They categorized the effort level required to complete the 3.5km circuit, plus another kilometer after lunch to get down to where the cars were parked, as low or "not difficult". In all fairness to some of us who completed the day a bit out of breath and with tired muscles we should have said that the effort level was moderate. It goes without saying that everything is relative.

On the other hand it was the opinion of all participants that the "fun meter" was on high the whole day long. Once the big effort was completed and the beautiful scenery to get to the restaurant was fully enjoyed we all arrived the Lac Retaud restaurant for a well deserved fondue with all the trimmings. Conversations during lunch were animated and I even heard calls for another go before the winter season ended.

I promise that we will think about it very seriously. We will even look around for a slightly easier run so that we can get snow shoeing enthusiasts of all levels, beginners, intermediates and experts to sign up for the AIC Snow Day V2.

AIC 2015 Chand Kaul Memorial Golf Tournament

The 2nd edition of the AIC Chand Kaul Memorial Golf Tournament was once again held under sunny skies and ideal golfing temperatures at the beautiful Maison Blanche Golf and Country Club in nearby Echenevex, France, on September 4th. 36 AIC members (plus a few guests) participated in the now traditional “Shotgun Scramble” event. Participants started arriving bright and early to partake in the continental breakfast on offer. They then moved over to the practice area to warm up before heading off to their assigned holes. The “shotgun horn” went off at 8:30 sharp and the teams were off to what was to be a fun filled morning of highly competitive, but friendly, golf. It should be noted that all of the teams completed their rounds in close to four and a half hours and for this the Maison Blanche director Cédric Perret-Bory thanked all of the AIC participants.

The weather was most cooperative which allowed us to enjoy the cocktail and buffet lunch that followed on the lovely Maison Blanche terrace overlooking the 10th and 18th holes. We even managed to get a peek at beautiful Mont Blanc and the surrounding mountain range. The prize giving ceremony was an event unto itself, hosted, once again, by AIC Club President Ed Flaherty and AIC Sports Chair Raphael Negron. As was the case last year prizes were awarded to all of the teams, which speaks volumes to the generosity of this year’s sponsors. Although we did not enjoy the support of a corporate partner, a small group of AIC members plus a few club friends stepped up to the plate to finance the bulk of this event. We would like to thank members Peter and Pamela Cloutier, Gilles Sautebin, John McCarthy, Roy Ryan, Cédric Good, Sandor Szabados, Ed Flaherty and Raphael Negron as well as “club friends” SWISS, Golf Center and Maison Blanche for their generous contributions.

AIC 2015 Tennis Tournament

This year's tennis event at the Tennis Club de Genève was considered at first a bit risky!!! Who had ever played a Mixed Round Robin tournament with a "handicap twist"? By the end of the weekend the 16 participants were unanimous in saying that it was different indeed and lots of fun. Contributing to the event's success was a radiant sun, a marvelous setting at the Parc des Eaux-Vives and a generous sponsor in Grimm Centre – André Chevalley SA. Make sure you are on the lookout for next year's event.

2014 Golf Tournament

The AIC 2014 Golf Tournament took place on Friday, 12 September, graciously hosted by the private Maison Blanche Golf Club in Exchenevex, France, under bright sunny skies, and perfect game temperatures. Organised this year by long-time Club members Raphael Negron and Christian Jordan, some 37 AIC members participated in the shotgun start scramble. The tournament was kindly sponsored by Grimm Motors SA in Geneva which exhibited a number of General Motors new car models including a sporty Corvette, all of which were displayed on the grounds and open to AIC members to take out for a test-spin after the game.

Golf Tournament

After enjoying a light continental breakfast, the players decamped to the practice range for some warm-up driving and putting. At 8.30 sharp, the gun sounded and the 10 teams were off from each hole on the front nine (with 2 teams starting on a long par 5). As indicated by the close final scores, the teams were pretty evenly matched. The tournament included prizes for the closest to the pin on 2 different holes.

Most teams finished up around 13.30 and reassembled to rehydrate on the lovely Maison Blanche restaurant terrace overlooking the 10th tee and 18th hole, followed by a sumptuous buffet lunch.

After dessert, Raphael Negron announced the winners and awarded prizes--thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, every player walked away with a prize.

The winners were:

  • Best "Gross" score (33 points) Patricia Ryan, Stéphane Gris, Michael Silverstein and Rashmi Barchha
  • Best "Net" score (44 points) Audrey Barchha, Michael Wolfson, David-Peter Le and Benjamin Cohen
  • 2nd best "Net" (41 points) Ed Flaherty, Robert Toole, Mark Mason and Raphael Negron
  • 3rd best "Net" (41 points) Josiane Negron, Jim Bissell, Stephen Moses and Chris Shepherd

At the close of the ceremony, AIC Club President Ed Flaherty presented the AIC Golf Tournament Cup to this year's best "gross" team (whose names will be engraved on the pewter cup), and also announced that beginning this year, the tournament would hereafter be known as the Annual AIC-Chand Kaul Memorial Golf Tournament in honor of long-time Club and Exec Committee member, and Sports Competitions organiser Chand Kaul who passed away last year.

The Club wishes to once again thank Raphael Negron and Christian Jordan for organising such a top shelf event while the Club is going through a challenging transition year, and of course all the members that participated, as well as our generous sponsors:

  • Grimm Motors SA
  • Maison Blanche GC
  • Clinique Genolier
  • Pamela and Peter Cloutier
  • Christian Jordan
  • Cedric Good
  • Jim Bissell
  • Ed Flaherty
  • Mike Wolfson
  • Raphael Negron

We hope to be back at the Maison Blanche next year, and to see more members either playing or joining the after-match lunch!

AIC 2014 Mixed Doubles Tennis Competition

On Saturday, September 13, on a magnificent, sunny day at the beautiful Tennis Club de Genève, the AIC’s annual mixed doubles competition took place to the great enjoyment of all participants and spectators. In the round robin format, the favored team of Bernard Genoud and Katia Lambert took the first prize in convincing fashion, demonstrating their top form.  Roy Ryan and Suzanne Hufschmid edged out veteran Claude Marshall and Erika Thierstein for second place in a thrilling match, while Claude and Erika took third place.

Charlie and Beate Miller, who placed fourth, played creditably against the strong field. They are a fixture in this event, and although the Club does not keep records going back beyond about 20 years, they appear to have set a record for longest participation in the mixed doubles event having appeared annually since the 1970’s.

There were smiles all around as the last matches were completed. The conviviality continued during lunch on the beautiful terrace of the TCG, overlooking the center court. As the participants and spectators drifted away afterwards, there were many expressions of gratitude for the event and promises to return next year with even better play.

Jacqueline Kaul was very much present in her customary role of support and encouragement, which she and her late husband, Chand, fulfilled for nearly 40 years. All present remembered Chand with affection and gratitude, as Chand and Jacqueline were for many years the heart and soul of the Club’s sporting events. Chand is greatly missed, but we rejoice that Jacqueline will continue to play an active role.

Participants in the mixed and men’s doubles events, as well as any other interested Club members, are cordially invited to the Club’s annual Tennis Dinner, to be held on Saturday, October 11, at the Tennis Club de Genève. Details will be circulated shortly to all members.
