Francisco de Goya (1746–1828) was a Spanish royal court artists and a pioneer of modern art; a painter of great portraits and an inventor of mysterious, personal pictorial worlds. It is in these seemingly unresolvable contradictions that we discover the magical fascination of Goya’s art.

Fondation Beyeler presents one of the most important Goya exhibitions  ever outside of Spain. In his sixty-year artistic career, Goya spanned the Rococo to the Romantic periods, and at the end  pushing open the gate to realms that do not differentiate between reality and fantasy. There, Goya is a keen observer of the human drama of reason and irrationality, of dreams and nightmares.

The exhibition in collaboration with the Museo Nacional del Prado brings together seventy paintings and a selection of  drawings and prints on a journey into the beautiful and the incomprehensible.

Biographical and background, view    https://youtu.be/x3LQoFuE3ZK     Goya: Understanding Modern Art (30 Min). Museum booklet available in GE/FR/EN, and audio guide.

Close-up: Self-guided tour with museum booklet (GE/FR/EN), after brief introduction.

This exhibition shows works of nine women artists occupying prominent positions within the history of modern art, from 1870 to the present day. It was at the beginning of this period that women artists in Europe and America were in a position to make their first significant incursions into the professional world of art. These nine artists are united in their depiction of the human figure: of portraiture, in widely differing forms; and the self-portrait.

The artistes include Mary Cassatt, Frida Kahlo, and Alice Neel.
